Today is Good Friday, according to the Christian calendar. I know I’m missing a deeper significance, but I’ve never got why it’s called GOOD Friday – traditionally the day that Jesus died…surely that’s not good?!
Of course it’s been borrowed from older traditions and religions (paganism or whatever) – in the same fashion that Christmas has. According to recent research, Jesus was actually born around 7BC on September 11th – see, you knew that date was significant. It could be 6BC – can’t remember, I’m also a bit dodgy at research – but you have to remember there was no year zero; it went 2BC 1BC 1AD 2AD. Except no-one counted like that then, coz no-one knew when the Messiah was coming. Speaking of which (tenuous Newcastle/Kevin Keegan link), don’t think Mr Shearer is going to perform miracles either…
But now I’m rambling. How come nobody seems as bothered by the over-commercialization of Easter like they are about Christmas? Easter – the weekend that zombie Jesus hatched from a giant chocolate egg laid by the Easter bunny!
At least I found some hot cross buns in Morrissons yesterday.
If that’s the way you roll, have a happy Easter. If it’s not, be happy anyway. You’ll never get back all the time you spend being sad, so make the most of your time on earth!
